Biography of Tiger Woods "Let your clubs speak for you." Tiger Woods was too young to notice the racism around him. He didn't understand that in this world, people were judged by the color of their skin. He couldn't speak out about it; he couldn't voice his opinions, or come up with possible solutions because he was too young. Tiger faced many racial ordeals throughout his life, mainly because he was half-Thai and half-black. He broke into the sport of golf as one of the youngest. He not only wanted to be the best black golfer; he wanted to be the b est golfer. The only way Tiger dealt with racism was to let his clubs do all the talking for him. The book starts off with Earl Woods, Tiger's father, during the Vietnam War. A sniper almost took out Earl but his friend saved him. Later on that day, he gets in a predicament with a bamboo viper, and once again, his friend saves him. The friend's name was Nguyen Phong, and he was good in combat; he was a tiger in combat. Nguyen Phong had the nickname of "Tiger". Earl vowed that if he ever had an o ther son, he would call him "Tiger". After the war, back in the United States, Earl met a Thai woman named Kultida and he married her and had a son. They named the baby Eldrick, but Earl called him "Tiger". Tiger Woods took interest in golf at a young age. He would watch from his crib as his father would practice his swing. He began playing golf since before he could walk. When he got a few years older, he began to compete in the Junior Nationals tournaments against older boys. He didn't hav e the strength to drive the ball far, but he had skill; he was blessed. Earl made Tiger some miniature clubs out of his old ones and from that moment on, he was obsessed with the sport. The way that Tiger played, it was no longer a sport, it became an art. With every hole he played, his game progressed to a whole new level. As Tiger grew older, he still played tournaments and racked up his victories, he even played for Harvard's golf team. Harvard was interested in having him play for them sinc e an early age. Later on in his career, he started to show that he wasn't perfect. He showed that he too made mistakes and was just like everybody else.The author of the book definitely knows a lot about Tiger. He got a lot of information for the book directly from Kultida and Earl Woods. John Strege wanted others to get to know Tiger. He wrote this book to show how Tiger got to be where he is now. The book starts off with how Tiger got the name Tiger. It was obvious that the author admired Tig e r. I really liked this book because I did not know where Tiger got his name. It was interesting to read about how Earl Woods vowed to call his next son Tiger to repay his friend Nguyen Phong for saving his life. I am not one to take interest in golf but this book was exciting. I liked reading about how Tiger started at a really young age and practiced everyday to perfect his game. Tiger is a good example of that if you put your mind to something, if you try hard enough, and focus all your atte n tion on something, you can do it; that right there you can apply to all aspects of life, not just golf or any other sport. I thought that this book was going to be boring because golf is boring, but I was really interested in reading details about all these tournaments that Tiger played in. I felt as if I was really there watching Tiger play golf. I don't think that there was anything wrong with this book; I didn't dislike anything about it. If There Is Nothing Lurking in the Darkness, Then Illumination and Exposure Are Pointless

Charles Brockden Brown’s novel Wieland is famous as the first American Gothic novel. It was published in 1798, at the very end of the Eighteenth Century and just fifteen years after the end of the American Revolution. While the novel was written in a time still dominated by Enlightenment-era thinking, the novel questions many of the assumptions of the Enlightenment. The realizations of the limits of the Enlightenment become apparent as the book progresses. The novel offers the characters Wieland and Pleyel as opposites in the novel, the former representing religion and the latter representing rationalism. Wieland is a novel that interacts with epistemology, that is, the study of knowledge; and the two characters are prime examples to focus on. The Enlightenment was characterized by the belief that the universe is a logical and orderly place and the hope that humanity would uncover the laws that govern it. Multiple scientific discoveries led to achievements in politics, the arts, and religion; but as the work proceeded, the importance of religion seemed to decline. As the years went on and questions remained unanswered after the American Revolution, it became assumed that not everything was as logical as it seemed at the spark of the Enlightenment. Another factor that added to the â€Å"burning out† of the Enlightenment was the French Revolution. Americans saw what a bloodbath the revolution in Europe had been and realized that the American Revolution could have just as easily been as bad. The combination of the limits of the Enlightenment with the near-missed massacre led writers to adopt a dark and opposite side of the reasonable thinking of the Enlightenment: the Gothic. This movement became the exploration of the extremes of emotions and limits of human understanding, so it included many mysterious happenings. Pleyel is Wieland’s closest friend, even though he has no connection with religion. His opposition provided Wieland and him with an extensive amount of room to discuss their personal beliefs. Having spent his youth abroad, Pleyel is a man of reason who allows his knowledge of the world to rule his decisions. Clara even states that Pleyel rejects â€Å"all guidance but his reasons,† confirming his Enlightenment-ness even further. Even though he and Wieland are unlike each other, they both offer views on the Enlightenment. A moment in the novel in which Pleyel parallels with Wieland’s character is when the former hears Carwin throwing his voice to give the illusion that Clara and Carwin are together and have been intimate with each other. Being the man of reason that he is, Pleyel decides that since he heard Clara and Carwin speaking it is only logical to conclude that what he hears is reality. He then takes it upon himself to court another woman since Clara â€Å"evidently† is not the virtuous woman he thought she was. Pleyel does not trust Clara after hearing Carwin’s biloquism, but if he truly loved her then he would take her word over what he heard. Unfortunately, Pleyel trusts that his own mind is able to discern the truth over Clara’s heart and runs away from the reality he cannot handle. He trusts that his reasoning is greater than his emotions and ignores his own feelings for Clara, which leads him to marry another woman before he finally ends up with Clara years later. Charles Brockden Brown’s Wieland is a Gothic novel of epistemology. It is unlike anything else that has been read this semester as it is one of the earliest Gothic novels written. The ancestral curse that befalls the Wieland family when Grandfather Wieland taints the noble bloodline is first carried to his son, whose only gratification is in his temple, who spontaneously combusts; and is then carried to his grandson who believes and trusts so firmly in his faith that he cannot differentiate between a biloquist and God’s actual orders and kills his family and himself. These â€Å"supernatural† occurrences are key in Gothic novels, even though Wieland and Clara are the only two characters who fall for them. I sthrongly agree with the suggestion of taking the spotlight away from ourselves and our misfortunes and pointing it towards other things and people we encounter. Some people are really egocentric to care about others and their problems (which are probably worse than theirs).This type of self-centred thinking affects our mood in a way where it may dampen our happiness. His speech raised my awareness on the arrogance of some people, and of mine too at times. He talked about learning to think, learning to control what you think. I feel that that is a step close to being a more positive and happy person. If you submit yourself to negativity, it will ruin you. We ha ve choices; it’s just a matter of making the right one not only for you but for everyone involved.What struck me the most was what he called the Capital T– Truth which is what matters — life before death. His message was to not stick to a routine just because you are afraid of change. Do not be dull, be alive. The major lesson I took from his speech was to enjoy every experience life offers us to make the most of our lives instead of living in the fast lane which will cause us to forget what and how things happened.
